In October 2000, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced a donation to the University of Cambridge to establish the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Selection of Gates Scholars is driven by the values of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which include a commitment to reducing inequities and improving lives around the world. The Gates Scholars' Society
The Gates Scholars' Society (GSS) is comprised of over 800 Gates Scholars and Alumni from over 80 countries. Our work focuses on fostering a global network of scholars, academics and future leaders interested on improving both their global and local communities. By bringing together a broad range of perspectives, we hope to promote international understanding, cooperation, collaboration and opportunity. Our approach utilizes information technologies to link individuals across all countries on issues such as climate change, poverty, arts, career development, political engagement and international education, in accordance with the goals of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the University of Cambridge.
Founded out of the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, the GSS has partnered with organizations including the Gates Millennium Scholarship, the Marshall Scholarship, the Truman Scholarship, the British Council, Cambridge in America, and many other notable organizations.
